The Ellington kid - short film response

The Ellington kid

Dan Sully
2013
5 minutes

I think this is my favourite of the set films as it has a genuinely interesting story and is told in an distinct way. The film has lots of contrasts, between the day and night, the friends and the action, this engages the audience as we are positioned with the friend hearing the story. However, this does not mean it is dulled down or feels unimportant to the audience, it's the opposite.
The impact of the story is effectively shown by the constant cross cutting between the re-telling of the story in the present and the action in the past.
This is as the viewer is connected to both the characters and the events: the story and the re-telling of it.
